Here's my problem. I have, what I consider, a beautiful bike. 1968 Suzuki T6, Scrambler...the list of names goes on and on. Anyway, I want this to be my bike, but it was a "barn find" with no title. Is there any way I might be able to legally title this bike, and how many steps are needed to do so. I'm willing to take all the time that is needed, as I acquired this bike for an awesome price. I appreciate any and all help in this. Thank you.

I know this has been brought up several times but for some reason I can't find the threads on this. everyone will tell you something a little different but the biggest thing is to get lucky enough to get called by the right person at the BMV. There is paperwork you need to get filled out that you get at the bmv, you will have to have a police officer come out and check out the bike. If it is a true barn find, there is a good chance it will come back clean and you can get you a new title. You may need a bill of sale , you can have Joe shmoe walking down the street do that as it really doesn't matter as long as you have one. Some branches will be very helpful others, well, they wont. Wish you luck on it. I have only done it once on my 67 Moto Guzzi but I am sure some of these barn find pros will jump in soon.
Welcome to the group!

Does the bike have to be running in order for it to pass police inspection? It's already torn down for the most part...

It doesnt even need to be road worthy, running or have all the components. Just bring the frame if thats what you have.

In the affidavit of ownership packet, it says you need an unopened certified letter that was sent to the seller's last known address. Is this the person you purchased the bike from, or the last person who had a title?

I just titled 3 bikes over the last couple weeks with no problems. Download from the BMV website the following: Bill of sale, Affidavit of Ownership, Odometer statement, Application for title and the Physical inspection form. Have a Buddy "sell" you the bike and have him sign the Bill of sale and Odometer disclosure. A police officer will complete the physical inspection form. Then copy your Drivers License and 2 forms to prove your address, ie cable bill, gas bill etc. Take those forms to the BMV in Danville and ask for a Bill of Sale title..Should be no problem unless it comes back titled to someone else in another surrounding state. Rare problem for an old bike though. Hope this helps. Keith

there are 2 ways to receive a title in Indiana. 1st get the title owner(which the BMV will provide) to file for lost title and send it to you. 2nd is it has to go in front of the judge to grant you a title which costs a little over $100 bucks. the BMV will provide you with all the documents you will need.
If you take the 2nd choice please provide as much info as to where you purchased the vehicle and how long it has been sitting and condition.
I have done this on several occasions and have received titles within 60 days without any problems.
