Can I use muratic acid to clean varnish out of my tank? If I do use it what do I neutralize it with afterwards? And what do I was the neutralizer out with because won't water cause a flash rust?

Go to cycle recycle and buy the kit that cleans it and also puts a dealer in it. It works great I did it to mine and it was easy

I clean my tanks with either "Metal Rescue" or "The Works" then i use a light chain inside and shake it around. After that i pour 2 stroke oil in it (just enough to coat the inside of the tank) and let it sit till im ready to use it.
Metal Rescue is $25 per gallon and is bio degradable and safe. pour it in and let it sit for about 9-12 hours, shake it up, then flip it upside down to get the top half of your tank. Rinse it out, coat with 2 stroke oil till you need to use it, or just fill up with gas.

The tank is next on my CB500/K2, once the carbs are done. I read good things about "The Works" so I'll give it a try. If it fails, where can you purchase Metal Rescue? -- John

Metal Rescue can be bought here. And it does work. I bought 5 gallon bucket of it and have done 5 gas tanks with it. You can re-use the metal rescue till it turns black. Its bio degradable and safe for the environment and you. Non acid. www.metalrescue.com/metalrescue.aspxthe works does well but is toxic. The "KIT" as stated above at Cycle Re Cycle does work well, but you are coating the inside of the tank with a liner and eventually it will break down. Ive used them successfully tho.

Alright I am in no way shape or form qualified to handle muratic acid. This plan is out the window. I heard radiator places will clean rusty tanks for you and even seal them in some cases since it isn't too different than what they do to radiators

I wouldn't seal it unless you absolutley have to. Just get it clean and keep it full of gas. As for removing rust, you could get some Naval Jelly. I've used The Works as well. I think its just weak hydrochloric acid. However, do not use it on aluminum (i.e. petcock) and rinse well when you are done. If you need to coat it I suggest checking out Caswell's epoxy kit. After seeing this stuff set up I wouldn't use anything else. www.caswellplating.com/aids/epoxygas.htmLots of places sell Kreem but I've heard horror stories. I think my CB 750 had it done, it looks like chunks of bubblegum and I can see bare steel in spots. The Caswell product flows like honey and coats really nice. I did it on a nylon tank but its made for steel. good luck

Metal Rescue Video - I have not used this product but I have heard great things about it and the video makes it look like a great product.

There's a radiator shop in Carmel that offers "Red Kote" gas tank sealer/liner services. This stuff is far better than Kreem and I highly recommend it. Now I've just gotta remember the name of the shop that does it... UPDATE: I remembered--it's Charlie's Radiator Service at 740 106th St., telephone number 844-9452.

I've heard good things about the POR 15 tank kit for steel tanks. I've used their products for years and their paint is some of the toughest stuff I've ever seen.
