id like to get everybodys thoughts and experiences on this subject. some people say its easy some say its not . ill relay my experiences as an example.i bought a cm400 last year, went to the beech grove license branch with the bill of sale and my police report both on their forms and was told they could not give me a title because the person i bought it from was not the person on the title. when i asked the name of the person on the tirle they said they couldnt give it to me. i had to run a title search through the bmv, then find and contact this person, get them to apply for a duplicate title then have them sign it over to me.the bike wasnt worth the hassle.i also bought a dream that had come here from florida. when i went to the bmv this time, since they had no record of it in their system they issued me a title on the spot! i also talked to the people at the small claims court and they said they could do it but it would cost about 100 dollars and would take 90 days so thats an option too. i also bought an rd350 from a guy in noblesville without a title because he assured me that it woiuld be no problem up there he does it all the time with bikes. well its almost a year later and still no title!people on craigslist are always saying its so easy too. so whats the deal here? why would it be easier to get a bike titled at another branch? what if the person the bike was last titled to has moved out of state or is dead? what if they refused to sign the title over or demanded the bike back or wanted money to do it?these are just some of the issues ive dealt with in the past. just wondered if anybody could shine some light on this. anybody here work at the bmv or know anybody that does? thanks, larry

Well I get special treatment at the bmv by my place cause the ladys up there have a crush on me. I'm dead sexy. I got the titles to three random cars in the parking lot last time I went up there just because I could. I roll like that

I never had to get a lost title but had problems when I bought a bike out of state that had a error on the vin.(a 2 where a Z supposed to be) . Long story short any # on the vin can be changed as long as you have a receipt and police affidavit. The downtown jerks wouldn't even try to help me. There are two older ladies @ the office on west 10th st (Sam's club parking lot) that know their shit about motorcycles and title issues and will do all they can to help. My advice is to try that place, or call the branches out in the county that are less busy and will talk to you, if that doesn't work you can try to get a builders title, a third option is www.broadwaytitle.com. Good luck

Lost title or no title? Lost title are easy if you are the one that lost it and it was in your name. No title can be more difficult and I aggree that it depends on the person you are dealing with at the BMV. Not all of us are as sexy as Karl so we may have to hope to catch someone in a good mood or that knows what they are doing. I had no trouble getting a title for my 67 guzzi, I had the paperwork that they required to file and had the police check done, I took it up there and they sent me a new title. I did however have to jump through hoops when I put my 64 vw beetle on a 1970 floorpan. They could not understand the reason for me doing that and I only had the title for the body. After a couple times having the police out to check it all out, I got me one.

ive got another good bmv story. when i bought a new triumph bonneville in 2004, i go to the license branch to get plates and the lady there says "triumph? who makes that? i said what? she says who makes triumph? harley- davidson? i had to explain to her how triumph is the manufacturer. i dont think she believed me.thanks tango ill try geist in the future. it just astounds me how you can go to different branches and get different answers.doesnt anybody there have this stuff written down? sometimes you get different answers from different people in the same branch

Larry,
Getting a title on a bike that only has a bill of sale is easy if you follow the BMV procedures. I know because I have done this on a 74 CB350F. You pay the $20-$25 to have BMV do the title search to get their name and address. You send a registered letter to the person asking them to re-apply for a duplicate title or go get a new one which you will pay for. I know...You asking what if this guy wants his bike back right? Well, if he does, you SOL.
Anyway, he has probably moved. So, when you get your registered letter back "undeliverable" DON'T OPEN IT. Take the letter and your paperwork back to BMV and they will issue you a NEW title.....Dan
