Nova,
It is a Smith's and I have had the guts removed from the housing. I found the magnet and needle disk bearing have wear. Or at least they both wobble and contact each other. That causes the needle to deflect to 50 mph even on one rotation by hand. I thought of getting it rebuilt but the price is $225. That would be cool if I could borrow your manual at some point or make a scan of it. I think my future son-in-law could help me have new bushings milled for it. Right now I’m not in a hurry I can use a bicycle speedo in the interim. After I get on the bike on the road and we meet and when you feel comfortable we discuss borrowing your manual. It would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Zilch

Zilch, I have them electronically. They are pretty big files though. I just did a google search for Smiths speedometer manuals and found nice pdfs for the magnetic and chronometric styles. Take a look and let me know if you want me to try to email the files or if you can find the links.

Thanks Nova. I will search them out. I think with the cost of rebuilding I will try to repair it myself. If that doen't work I will purchase.

Well, got it back together, calibrated it using a GPS and it works OK. In the long term, I'm going to buy a repop and send it the original to be refitted with new innerds. I'm not sure how to spell innerds that is my first time.
I like going through little projects like this. I learned something new about the mystrious world of speedometers.
