Safe & Dirtbike?? Hmm... never made the connection.
Keep an eye on CL they pop up all the time. If you want a good runner you are probably going to spend around $500. Every once in a while a great deal will show up but it's usually gone just as fast.

cb5, might not be what you are looking for, but fyi my 6yr old son, tall and skilled for 6, is starting to outgrow his 2003 ktm 50cc. No idea what size of bike you are looking for. It's a fast bike but I toned down the clutch and it would now be safe as a beginner bike. Suspension is far superior to any japanese kid bike which really smooths things out and adds some safety if the terrain is rough or the kid likes to ride fast. Ideally a honda would be a better choice if all you want is a simple zero maintenance bike that puts around. But the KTM is mild mannered and really just needs a 5 minute oil change every 6-8 hrs of engine time and an occasional air filter clean and oil. Hasn't given me any other trouble, $900 if you want it and that's a good price on these. just throwing it out there. Google if you want to see pics of one, technically it is a 2003 ktm 50 pro junior. FYI, the motor is liquid cooled 2 stroke. Mine is a 7 or 8 out of 10 cosmetically and 9 out of 10 mechanically. 317-696-6059 Later, Mickdee

Then I advise a honda XR50 aka crf50. Indestructable, never need worked on, and quite frankly strong enough for you to ride around too. Just stick the auto tranny in 2nd gear and let them go. If you need a shorter seat height, that would the only reason I would recommend a yamaha pw50 instead. but they outgrow the pw50 so fast that you should skip that step if possible. $500-800 will buy you what you need. And don't skip on gear, in my opinion. used gear is pretty cheap, doctor visits aren't and they ruin a kids confidence. I've got a little extra gear if you end up needing something, I'll sell you what I can cheap. Later, Mickdee, 317-696-6059
