Does anyone know anything about points or coils. My bike turns over but won't start. The guy I got it from thought it was points.

Well I do know if you don't know what the gap set point is you could use a match pack cover and gap it that way that's all I had to do and it works great

whats the make and model and year of the bike. is there power to the points when the ignition is on and you rotate the engine to F "fire"
have you filed the points? have you done a tune up on the rest of the bike, valves, plugs, etc?

Or you are just going by what the original owner thought was wrong with the bike? any history on the bike? Since I have no idea of the history of the bike and or your mechanical ability, I am going to start with basics. lets figure out what the problem is before we tear into the points. How long ago since it ran? If it has sat for a long time, there is a good chance the carbs need a rebuild. Are you not getting spark at the spark plug? If you are not sure, pull a plug out, put the wire back on the plug and ground the spark plug to the cylinder head while turning the bike over (hold the plug using some rubber handled pliers or you may find out the hard way that you have spar). If you have a spark between the gap, I am guessing it is not the points and is a carburetion problem.

It didn't run when I got it. I put new plugs and a battery and drained the old gas out of it then it ran but ran rough. Now I'm not getting any spark at the plugs. The last time it ran before I got it was last summer.

Idk I'd say your plugs are fouled out. Take them out and make sure they are not black and or wet. The carbs could need cleaned as well. If it ran ruff then jets could be clogged but I suppose if the points weren't set right then it would be off as well. I have a tool used to set gaps somewhere. I believe ur gaping should be .034 or .34 i don't remember.

So I put points and a condenser on my cl350. I'm pretty sure I set the points right but now I'm not getting spark. Any suggestions?

Did you follow the manual? Are they opening and closing all the way?

It's a 72 cl350. I put new points, condenser, plugs, and battery in it. That's all I've done. When I put new plugs and a battery in it I got it to run and I actually rode it but it ran rough. Like one side was only getting fuel. I know it has a bad petcock but it stopped getting spark. So I put new points in it and set them and i put the new condenser on and I'm still getting no spark.
