My primary bike right now is an 86 xj700x. It runs great but after about 10 seconds at idle is dies slowly. I removed the carbs and checked the bowls and floats found the be really clean. Reassembled and found same problem. I am a tech at a local car dealer and and know cars well but never had much experience on carbs. So after reading alot about carbs it sound like my problem is comming from the primary jets which control the idle speed and low trottle range. I removed all 4 abdjustment screws and found a torn seal on the needle valve on the base of the screw bore. I have ordered a new set of seals. Hopefully that will work anyone have any similar problems or ideas?

mainly just pull the carbs a part clean and blow out every hole you can find make sure your floats are set at proper height. Make sure your float valves are not sticking. Make sure your plugs are all good and your caps might have resistors? Had a prob with one cyclinder last year, the plug kept going bad, it was because my plug caps resistor was bad. Got new plugs caps and it fixed my prob.

did you check for a vacuum leak around your new runners? if it's only running choked it might be pulling in air around the runners.

mine will run off coke if i adjust the idle up , i think i have a issue with my throtle cable cause if you play with it , it idles up to 5,000 then hit it and it goes back down

I never totally fixed it, thanks for all the help tho. I did check the caps, they were all out of spec. Replaced, noticed it ran better and started easier. But still rough idle and would die. Cleaned the carbs again and made sure my pilot circuits were spotless, no change. Checked timing, valve clearances, compression, and attempted to sync but would not idle steadily enough for that. During one such attempt a coolant line burst and sprayed my legs with hot coolant!! Minor 1st degree burns. Now the bike is back from where it began... Craigslist!

Okay a couple things I found have you guys adjusted the valves they say that can cause idle issues. Also the say blocking 25% of the vacuum intake port over the gas/ air main bore can make them run a little bit better.

another odd thing to consider is airfilters. i had my airfilter in backwards and my bike was running very poorly and rich. turned it around and it ran alot better but i do have some gas leaks in my carbs due to the fact i reused the gaskets that were pretty streatched and worn out my air/gas mix set screws are also almost all the way backed out as well so when i set them in it should stop running sooo rich and run better.

I also found they say if you have the YICS garbs that with age the have a problem the idle getting uneven and delivery lymph.

I checked my float levels and they were even all the way across but could not find a spec. From what rob told me at recycle part 2 is that my xj the maxim x is rare and has what is called a " genesis" motor which has no yics and 5 valves per cylinder, I guess it's special... But that doesn't matter much if it doesn't run right.
I don't know about fuel spilling out your pilot adjustment screws, mine had o- rings at the base of them maybe they could be missing?
