I think I have a problem. I was cleaning up my Honda CB360 engine before I added new gaskets and put the new painted parts back on and came across this. My oil filter screen looks like it's full of metal shavings. It's barely a screen. Now I don't have any information on what the previous owner was like or what kind of service or problems the bike has had in the past. I didn't want to have to do a full rebuild on the engine but it's starting to look like that's the best idea. Anyone have have any idea what's going on in my engine? This is my first restoration so I have no clue. Thanks for any help you have. Attachments:

What year is the 360? Does it have a rubber cam chain tensioner wheel? If so I'd say that's what's in the filter. I can't tell from the picture the color. If they are shiny silver then it is metal. If it's more black and oily then not. I would flush the system with kerosene, put fresh oil in it. Put 100 miles on it drain it, filter it through cheese cloth and see what shows up. (after verifying that cam wheel, IDK if 360's have them or not. I thought they did.) Good luck! this is the "fun" part!

First off is it ferrous? Can a magnet pick it up. If so then a tear down is in order. Could be bearings and retainers eating them selves up. If its nonferrous, magnet will not pick up. Then it could be cam chain too loose slapping inside its chamber. Or worse main bearing journals or camchain journals. If it is plastic, then the cam chain tensioner is in need of replacement. Their is a bulletin out for upgrading, i think it is too make sure the tensioner is the right shape and length. If you have two center punch marks between the CB360E-:xxxxxx then the upgrade was done. Kinda curious to your diagnosis of the debri? More info could lead us to better pinpoint answers.

Then again it could be sludge!?! Check the centri oil filter on the clutch side of the engine. Its a snap ring and pull the cap. If the cup is full of sludge then the bike was really negleted. Then novafrk's flush then change is in order.

This is all a huge help. I wasn't able to get into my garage today but I'm thinking a full tear-down is in order. I'll check what you've said and get back to you, which means I'll be in my garage all day tomorrow. If anyone has time or is out riding near Garfield Park and would like to stop by and check it out (since I'm a newbie) that would be awesome. Just shoot me a direct message or text if you'll be in the area and I'll be around.
Thanks again for your help guys.

I believe I found the source of the shavings, but I don't trust myself to tear into the engine any further than I have. Does anyone know of a shop that would do the rebuild on the bottom end of my engine? Or if anyone with the know-how would be willing to do it. I'd be willing to negotiate prices, but this is over my head.
I'd rather have it done right than guess at it myself. If anyone can point me in the right direction, please do. I want to get this thing running. Message me with details.

Id try to have someone from here do it instead of a shop $$$. I know Barnfinder can. I just did my first top end rebuild on a 750. so im sure the 350 is alot easier.

Top end is no problem. It's the bottom end I don't trust myself with.

If u decide to take to sports bikes unlimited the parts and labor will have warranties. But if u do it u get to learn so both have positives

I realized there is a mount on the bottom of the cases that's broken off so I'm gonna need new cases regardless. Cycle recycle has a running engine that I was thinking about picking up and selling parts off my current motor to make up the difference. Just by the looks of it, it's in better shape than mine.
