i'm helping a friend with his newly acquired cm185. we discovered that every bulb is blown on the bike. headlight, tail, turns, controls. it's runs fine though. is there a something in the electrical system that could have made this happen? maybe a common problem? i had a few random turn signal bulbs, we put them in and they worked. we didn't want to buy a new head light and just have it blow out. any ideas?

Just assume that who ever had it prior to your acquisition did not know what they were doing. Could have tried to jump it with an improper voltage/charger. Try and use a volt meter at the lo/hi for the headlight and see whats happening. And also try and activate one of the brake switches while connected to the headlight. Another problem is corrosion within the light sockets and terminal connectors.
Had an 82 Honda express that all lights were blown, but since it was a 6 volt system. I assumed that somebody did not know what they were doing. Sure nuff, no issues with proper battery.

Just replace the turn signal lights and see if they work if they blow then it is a problem. But like barnfinder said someone probably hooked it up to jump it and had charger on the wrong settings. I also know that blowing bulbs is a common problem on bikes that run just off a magneto when people make the batteryles conversion. A copasator fixes the problem.

The voltage regulator may be bad also. If it's over charging the system it will blow all of the lights. Eventually it will damage the coils as well. Fire it up and see how many volts are going to the battery. If it's over 14 - 14.5 VR is probably the culpret. I don't know if that style is adjustable or not. Also rev the engine up to 2-3k rpm and check the voltage again. My $0.02

78-79 CM185's are 6 volt systems. Pretty sure somebody tried to use a 12 volt charger/jumper.

In light of this new info... probably someone put a 12 volt charger on it :-D
I'm a touch slow sometimes.

too add, some bikes will blow the headlights if you run them with out a battery hooked up to the bike. Has something to do with the battery completing the charging circuit. I would also agree with the regulator/rectifier idea it could be bad and over charging the system. Or the jumping it wrong idea.
2 cents, steve
