Thanks! This group is really helping to motivate me! If you ever need a hand with something let me know. Yea, motivation! I'm on travel for work over the next few weeks, but will probably need a hand with some lifting in the garage when I get back. I'm at southport and Madison, where are you located?

Hey Everyone, I made big progress on the Battery Tank today. So I made the battery rack with feet so it would sit up off of the bottom bungs where in theory wires will be going. Then I welded the wings on to the rack. These I drilled and made little tabs that I tapped and bolted to the wings. Once I get the center section of the tank mounted to the frame I will slide the battery tray inside and make sure it is level and weld the tabs to the tank. On the opposite side I will weld tabs on top of the "wings" So it will be captured under them locking it all in place, theoretically. :-) Everything I've read about the regulator/rectifier and the ingnition module, plus more than a few suggestions from those that have gone before me, says to have a source of air flow... So I think what I'll have to do is on the round end pieces, make a cut out on the front side so fresh air can get into it. I'll epoxy a piece of screen in it to keep bugs and crap out. I don't want to fry my electronics... everything is a sealed unit so water shouldn't be a big issue. I'd rather not but it needs airflow. So now I need to figure out the mount for the oil tank. The tank, I estimate is going to weight between 10-15lbs when I'm done. Do you guys think two 3/8" grade 8 bolts will be enough to hold it on securely? Or should I make a lower mount to help with movement? I know other tanks don't usually have a lower mount but 3 qts of oil doesn't weigh 15lbs either. My thoughts are to weld in a 3/16" plate of steel in to the area behind the oil filler (the plate will fill the hole I'm taking this picture through) This will give me a nice flat area to make my seat mount and provide some additional reinforcement for the frame. I will probably weld a couple of bungs just to have a little more meat for the bolts to bite on. Also I can probably have a flat leather pouch made that will attach to it to hold a tool roll under the seat. That's about it for today. Let me know what you guys think. Eric

Working on the plate for the battery tank mount. I've got a little more fittment to do but I think it's going to work out just fine.

Well my 71 is about 3 years in, but 2 were spent on the engine.
Maybe I'll start a build thread to get a fire under my ass!

Seeing the bikes out at Goodtiming really fired my ass up! My engine rebuild was supposed to be easy peasy... "I'll just disassemble it until I stop finding things wrong with it... And then I was pulling the sludge trap... "
