So I'm planning a motorcycle trip with my brother this Summer. We'll start in Indianapolis and ride around Lake Michigan over the course of 4-6 days. We've both been riding since we were kids, but now we live far apart from each other. For the last four years we've been meeting at various locations, renting motorcycles from eaglerider.com for scenic trips and having a great time. Well this time since we're starting in his home city I thought I'd see if I can rent from somebody directly. I'm not looking for a fancy bike. Ideally I'd like to rent something like a KLR-650 in good running order and pay $400-500 bucks for the week. This is similar to what I might pay at eagle-rider if I take full advantage of the right promotions. The advantage from my end is that I don't have to rent from a place in Chicago so the logistics are easier. The advantage to the owner is that they make some money.
I know the first thing people think about renting out their motorcycles is "oh no, not my baby, you'll wreck it and treat it like a rental", and I totally get that. All I can say is that my brother and I are pretty tame riders. I've been a licensed rider since 2004 and besides a run-in with a deer in 2007 I've never had an accident or a run-in with the law because I'm a respectful rider. That being said I do carry full comp/collision on my own motorcycle in Seattle which will cover me while I ride any other motorcycle. The time it would take to ride from Seattle to Indianapolis to start our ride together around Lake Michigan is prohibitive on my time budget. Which is why I'm inquiring here.
So what do you think? Do you, or anybody you know in Indianapolis have a KLR-650, V-Strom (which is what I ride at home), or other long-distance capable bike they might be able to rent for a week this Summer? Is this crazy? Thanks.
