Mmmmkay, where to start? I have had this 74 Suzuki GT250 in the shed for about 6-7 years, it's been in the family since new. She's got 8200 miles on it and is complete albeit dirty. It sat garaged from 1980-1986ish when the carbs were rebuilt and it saw a bit of action then sat again until 1993ish when it had the carbs rebuilt again and it was used for about 3 years and has been sitting since. There is a minor known electrical issue that blows the fuse and headlight when high beams are used but that's no biggie. I don't have a pic of it as it sat but yesterday I was inspired to pull it out, tear it down and start throwing parts away. If it doesn't make it go faster I don't want it there. I honestly believe it would have started and ran just the way it sat but I want a cafe style bike and this old flat seat was just sitting there....I hoped to see a few on here but I'm not finding any old GTs? The oil injected 2 stroke in this thing is BA, factory rated at 31hp@7000rpm. I suspect when I get done that will be old news though with the straight air filters and new exhaust. I hope to get some advice/assistance from some of you veterans as I just don't know about a few things regarding wiring. I'll post a pic of her torn down as she lays tomorrow but I'm looking for advice on replacing the ignition switch with a toggle and push button (I think it has electric start as well as kickstart?). I hope you guys can help me find some parts too, most I'll be improvising but unsure about things like the brake master cylinder, can I use just anything that fits or does it need to be from the same model bike? How strict is IN about having the front brakes? Can I eliminate the front signals? I'm not from IN and some of the stuff here seems just plain silly to me but hey it is what it is...Pics to come.

Never mind, I solved the mystery of the numbers.

welcome! when considering your intake/exhaust mods, and you may already know this, but 2 strokes must maintain back pressure at the exhaust or you'll loose all that great power. that means stock pipes or properly tuned chambers. I know this from screwing one up. I'd figure that out first since you plan more than a few mods. There are several 2stroke gurus around but couldn't tell you if they watch this forum. Also, if you were my friend I'd be comfortable sayin' dude... use a front brake. I'm certain you can get a nice drum brake wheel cheap for that easy, clean, classic look. signals? don't know the law there. lotsa people don't use 'em around here. lotsa folks run a vertical license plate too (me) and thats not legal... but I've never heard of anyone getting dinged for one. yes, pics

Yes, I'm a bit concerned about the exhaust and plan to eventually put some tuned pipes on but I'm more worried about jetting the carbs right so it doesn't run too lean. It already has a nice disc brake on the front but I HATE front brakes. I just figure if I can get it inspected and titled without I'd rather not spend money on a new master cylinder. My inspiration is to try to make it a 100mph bike for under $100, improvising and fabricating from stuff I already have. I also want to strip as much weight off as I can, it only comes in around 350lbs but I'd like to see it around 275 or so. I'm going to go read the help section and figure out h ow to post pics, I've got some of the tear down.

OH, I had an interesting idea for the battery too. I've got an old 14.4v cordless drill with LI batteries...you see where I'm going here I'm sure.

Well it's slow going as I keep becoming distracted with other projects and losing interest but I'm making progress. She's all degreased and cleaned up. I'm picking up a sandblaster tomorrow and should be able to get her prepped for some quick cover paint and remove the oxidation from the casting in no time. Been working everything I've pulled off with 1000 grit, at least the few parts that are going back on. Still looking for ways to cut corners and stay in budget. 100mph for $100.
