Okay, I'm in the process of restoring two 1970's Scramblers - 1973 CL350K4 Scrambler
- 1974 CL200 Scrambler
Does anyone know of a twin engine mechanic or rebuilder? Honestly, I have one of the engines pulled and will be pulling the other so I can even drive a ways for the right person to do the work. I'm curious what this costs, the time it takes to complete and the quality of the rebuilder.

there are plenty of guys that could build those engines here in indy. if your pulling the engine, why not learn your self? Cost, depends on what all the engines need. Some builders would be in the 1500.00 to 2000 range for a full rebuild. Even to do it yourself would be about $500 + defending on parts. Whats wrong with each engine?

there are plenty of guys that could build those engines here in indy. if your pulling the engine, why not learn your self? I've debated doing it myself and I have access to most tools to do it. I thought if I did this myself that I could really learn a lot about these twin engines especially if I do both engines. The one issue I will run into is cleaning the parts, since I don't have a tank. Also, do I need to send items off for inspection (like you have to do on a car's engine head)? Cost, depends on what all the engines need. Some builders would be in the 1500.00 to 2000 range for a full rebuild. Even to do it yourself would be about $500 + defending on parts. Whats wrong with each engine? Neither engine has been started in many years. They don't appear to be frozen/locked. With the CL200 I may try to just change fluids, clean it up and install it to see if it fires up or not. This motorcycle is near complete with all the body work and parts ready to put the bike back together. The CL350 is a rust bucket. The rust on this motorcycle is so bad on some of the chrome parts that they are beyond cleaning up My fear is that this engine is so greasy, grimy and has rust inside. The pros to this bike is that it has title, and all the original parts to it. I think it could be a good candidate for restoration so I was thinking I would like to tear the engine down and rebuild it to do a complete restoration. I did pull the tank last night and it isn't bad on the inside (light rust...mostly old gas and grime). The downside on the tank is there were a few (3) rust spots where the seat meets the tank that have rusted through. I'm taking the tank today to a body shop to see what they would charge to repair, reline and paint it.

i would first start with checking the compression of each cylinder on each engine. If its good, run it. You can soda blast the out side of the engine to clean it up. Im sure one of us would be glad to rebuild your engine though. your typical shop is going to be about $75 per hour. we would prob be about $40 per hour plus parts.

Good points tango911
I will check each cylinder's compression before taking the drastic measures of rebuilding the engines just because. I need to get a compression kit and figure this out...
Also, I will look into sodablasting as you suggested. I did google and youtube this to understand how this is any different then sandblasting. I like that the rubber seals and gaskets are likely to not be effected by sodablasting. Looks like the closest shop that does this is within an hours drive (well worth the trip).
If the result is a complete rebuild then I will look into this more when it is determined.
Thanks again for the information and advise.

Yup South Bend, IN
I found some soda blasting shops within an hour of me so I may go that route first.
I hadn't been on this site the past couple weeks due to work travel that sent me to Italy and India. It was really interesting to see the motorcycles in these two countries. I could NOT believe how many off road bikes were being ridden in Italy and how many small 125cc shit bikes were riding in India LOL.
