I have been working a little to get get my recently picked up 76 GT550 to fire and run before tearing down for a rebuild/restore. Been having problems with fuel that was leaked into the engine and pipes. The petcock and float valve seats failed and filled the engine and pipes with fuel. I have the pipes off and draining and needed to fire her up to trouble shoot a problem. Keep in mind, the lower crankcase still had fuel stuck in there. I loosely bolted the head back down...mounted the carbs and hooked up my static tank again. I turned the key, kicked her over and when she sparked it shot about a 3 foot fireball out the exhaust ports lighting the fuel that was trapped in the bottom!!!! WOW!!!! There were burning puddles of gas on my garage floor . Gas and flame engulfed the front end...damn. No damage to anything, thank God. I then moved my operation outside where my Son played fireman. Started it a few more times and let it "blow out" the unburnt fuel and clean itself out. A clang sound does seem to be around the kicker area and I hear it when kick starting at the bottom of the stroke....thinking I have something behind the clutch cover not right. I am planning to pull the engine and prob splitt case and replace and many bearings and seals as I can find online and through dealer. That flameball was intense!!!
