Hey guys. I'm new to the forum and only a part time indy resident but I hope to move my bike up here for the spring. I'm a University student so I hope to rent a garage somewhere. I bought this bike in May from a man up in Chicago for $450. He had it as a rolling chassis and the rest were in boxes. I have never done anything like this so I spent the rest of my summer living in my garage and reading the Clymer manual to try and put her together right. After about 4 months and a little under $1,800 I had a rebuilt engine and everything back together and working. She still needs some love but I think I'll finally be able to ride this spring. Thanks guys! I appreciate the welcome and the support. I hope to have this bike for a long time and to work on it that entire time. I have a lot of inspiration and a long way to go till I am satisfied.
I did a complete engine tear down myself and its some fun stuff. Especially when you have to order more piston rings because you break 2 when trying to put them on.
The bike has had 3 owners in its lifetime.
The original owner who up until 3 years ago, rode it every year. He then tried to switch to flat across bars and cut the wire harness, brake cables, throttle cables and every other important thing on the handle bar like the rare right switches.
It then sat outside for 3 years not getting any love until the next owner bought it, tore it down and decided it wasn't worth his love.
I bought it from him then literally in boxes. I had nothing to look off of and no prior experience so it was a lot of guess and check. All of the nuts and bolts were mix matched etc. Also a lot lot lot of cleaning off of rust. Totally worth it though.
Right now she needs a new charging system because the battery dies after a few days, a headlight because the low beam bulb is broken, a turn signal relay, and side mirrors. Also I need to go through the carbs again because it doesn't have the pick up and go that will knock you off the bike like a 750 should.
I can probably do that over the winter when I am on break from University but in the spring it would be nice to have a garage to work in.
Any advice you guys have on my throttle problem would be great and any advice on painting would also be appreciated. I tried automotive paint and clear but it didn't hold up when I dripped gas on the tank...

you have to use a polyurethane clear. Spraymax 2k is the best in a spray can. it comes with a built in activator. As far as the carbs, you need to clean them, set them up for whatever exhaust you have. adjust the valves and set the timeing , then you need to do a vacuum check on the carbs and get them synced.

also your chain looks very tight. should have about 1 inch of play in it or so.

I've rebuild the carbs because one of the main jet towers was cracked. So one of the carb bodies is from a different set than the others. I probably have to just play around with the air/fuel, the heights, and the floats to make sure they are all right.
Thank you for the advice on the clear coat! That will save me in the future. The picture was taken when I was putting the chain on actually and aligning my tire. As you can see it is just out in the backyard from the walk in basement/work shop. The chain and rear tire have been adjusted according to the manual.
I've been reading sohc4 forum for almost a year now. I wouldn't have been able to put this bike together without that site.
