I have always had Westfield Yamaha mount tires for me because their prices on tires have been decent and they have always charged me only $20 a wheel to install (which I thought was reasonable)....and they are across from where I work. I've probably used them 5 or 6 times over the last couple of years when replacing tires and/or tubes. I took a set of wheels and tires (purchased online) for my VFR in there today and they informed me it would be $40 a wheel to install. Seriously?? The only reason I purchased new tires online this time is because their prices for tires this time around seemed so damn high. I couldn't get a 180/55-70 from them for under $190 (not including install or tax)!
Since I hauled these wheels all the way up here with me today and had already lugged them into the shop, I just told them to do it. Not pleased at all with that price though. Is $40 the norm now? Considering I had to take the wheels off the bike myself and carry them in, seems like it shouldn't be that high. What...it probably takes them all of 15 minutes if that to do the work.
By comparison, I'm having new tires put on my car this weekend as well and install is going to be $15 a wheel...and that's for a 55 series tire and having to remove runflats and service tpms sensors at the same time. What's so friggin' hard about mounting motorcycle tires that makes it so expensive??
End of rant.

its not hard, thats the thing. They are actually easier than tubed tires if you ask Keith Carlson. Get your self a tire changing kit and do them your self next time. its not bad if you have the right tools. $80 seems crazy. And you can balance them yourself as well.

Yeah, what's Keith's handle on here? Will definitely hit him up next time. Hell, I could have probably taken the $80 and get a cheapo tire changer from HF! grrrr

Contemplated doing it myself but did not want to scratch the new powder coat. Need to get a kit and practice on some old rims this winter.....

We charge $42.50 per rim. I can't comment on whether or not I think it's ridiculous. I think everyone is raising the cost because we can't compete with the big warehouses on tire price. We have customers come in with tires that they purchased online below our dealer cost.

Thats the burn...if the shop rate is $90/HR it shouldn't cost more than $45 for a pair off the bike...shouldn't matter where the tires are bought

Thats the burn...if the shop rate is $90/HR it shouldn't cost more than $45 for a pair off the bike...shouldn't matter where the tires are bought I got these tires from Motorcyclesuperstore.com and they have a list of "preferred installers". I didn't pay much attention to it when I ordered since I thought I had my own "preferred installer". Looking at the list again after the fact, the going rate for mount/balance is about $40-50ish....but that includes the work to remove/reinstall the wheels on the bike. Looks like the average shop rate is about $60/hr. Clearly the shops are charging well over hr rate to do the work. I guess they have to pay for that tire changing machine....but geesh! I agree with Shannon....that's probably what's happening here. They try to reward you for buying tires from them by lowering the install price....but their prices were so much higher. I think i'm still ahead paying $80 for install. Maybe I should just quit whining.

Fatty's Cycle in Fortville charges 20 per tire still. Tubes and or balance beads cost a bit more thou. Weights are included.
There pretty swamped most of the time requiring two trips, but sometimes you get lucky and theyll jump right on it just depends.

Hell, I could have probably taken the $80 and get a cheapo tire changer from HF! grrrr wavehog Thanks Btw, went in yesterday after work to pick up the wheels and the shop manager had lowered the price to $30 a wheel. He saw the shock on my face apparently when I dropped them off. He said that they charge the high price to encourage people to buy from them.....I explained that the quote I was given by their parts guy was way high and that's why I bought elsewhere. Apparently the shop gives different pricing than the parts counter when you call them directly. Whatever. New tires are on, bike rides great, and I don't need to worry about it for a couple of years now.
