I am starting a restoration on a 1973 Honda CB450-K and want to know the best way to clean the cases on the engine. I has the yellow/gold coating but much of it has worn off. I don't want to do any damage but need something fairly strong to get everything clean. Any thoughts on the best way to do this?
Note: I am the second owner of this bike, which has set for 20+ years. It only has 8,500 miles on it, the engine is free, and everything is there, but much work needs to be done.
Thanks for the help!

Take some simple green and scrub it on and then let it sit for awhile then power wash it off. Of course make sure all of your openings are sealed up

3m scotch pad, degreaser like simple green and elbow grease.
Want to get thru the finish and shine it a bit? Put metal polish on Sand paper, 150, 240, 600, 1000 grit only use your hands never a tool. Repeat as needed.

First I scrape most of what I can get off...it will save time and money on cleaners. Then I use an engine cleaner like gunk, with a pressure washer or hose to get it 95% clean. Final degreasing with gasoline or simple green with rags and brushes, depending on what's left.
If you want to remove the factory clear, paint stripper will do the job. I use KleenStrip.
If you want to degrease your frame (or other steel parts) I find the best thing to use is Easy Off oven cleaner. It will burn so wear gloves. It will also take some paint with it so keep that in mind. I have used it on aluminum but it will etch and discolor it so don't leave it on long.
I should have asked ...are you doing a frame off? If not, sick to the mild cleaners.

For the engine. Before u take the covers off plug off evertthing clean the engine then soda blast the casings. Then take ur covers off clean with soap and water , then spray with stripper , rinse with water , sand with 1000, then with 2000. Now ur ready to either buff and polishout, or use a soft scrub white pad to do thebrushed look.
