Well all, tonight was productive yet heartbreaking... I don't know if I'm doing something wrong the 47 times I've tried to index the shift quadrant or if something is broken inside the transmission/shifter... Any time I try to shift through the gears... turning the wheel, the engine everything... It make one big clunk... and that's it. I can't get it back to neutral although it's in a false neutral... if I push down on the shifter and kick it over the real wheel will turn but I know that's not right. Any triumph guru's out there?
Hogsausage... help!

www.triumphtalk.com/forum.php Try this site in the classics section post your issue there and ask for Grandpaul. He rebuilds Triumph Classics for a living. Do you have the shop manual for the bike? If not I think there is a pdf of one in the manuals section at the same site.

I'll be gone this weekend, but next week hopefully I can swing over. As long as it's not a Thursday or impromptu meeting I won't be in a rush to get anywhere. I'll try and rope Rich in too and hopefully between the 3 of us we can figure it out.

I almost think it has to be something in the shift mechanism... the gear shift smoothly by hand. I'm 99% sure I'm indexing the quadrant correctly... I think the shift pawls need to be replaced or the springs are weak.

Look on ebay for some extra forks, springs, ect.. You could probably find duplicates of everything fairly cheap and do some comparisons.

Both shift forks are new... thrust washers, seals and one bearing... the bits in the outer cover I have not done anything with. One of the shift forks was worn down to .020" give or take like the person was standing on the shifter loading that side.... poor abused bike... This is why I've taken to naming her "Heartache". Every step of the way she fights me... Just when I think I'm getting somewhere with her she slaps me... I LOVE these old machines. She's been abused for so long I think she's afraid to trust anyone again. :-)

Hey all. I've made some progress on my project. I have the charging system, tail / brake light wired and working. I had some issues with the headlight... PO's suck. Luckily parts are available for it. My parts came in from New Zealand to finish assembling the engine. My to do list is pretty short now. CARBS top the list... I may forgo getting them worked by Lund machine at this point. I can make these work and get on the road. Still evaluating. Nova

@ Zilch56 - thank you very much! This donnor bike was essentially an assembled basket case. Had it been complete and not butchered by PO's I would have restored it or done a mild cafe type build. This poor bike on the other hand, I felt wanted to be cut up. I think both restorations and custom bikes have their place. I feel it is completely wrong to cut up a complete survivor. IMHO there are WAY to many untitled, butchered basket case bikes out there to bob/cafe or whatever. Let the survivors survive!
@ 550fi Thanks! I'm not sure if I like the colors I've used. I think the yellow stands out too much. Good thing is I can't see it when I'm riding it! :-)

Bikes are for the owners to do with what they want to fit their needs. That's the fun of it all.
